In today’s episode we’re speaking to Jay McTighe. Jay brings to our discussion a wealth of experience developed during a rich and varied career in education. He’s served as a teacher, the director of a state collaboration of school districts, a school improvement expert, and an educational consultant more broadly. Jay has an extensive background in professional development and is a regular speaker at national, state, and district conferences and workshops.

Jay is an accomplished author, having co-authored 14 books, and his books have been translated into ten languages. Jay has also written more than 35 articles and book chapters, and been published in leading journals. Perhaps most famously, Jay co authored the award-winning and best-selling book Understanding by Design series with Grant Wiggins. About which we’ll be speaking today!

I loved exploring the issues surrounding understanding by design with Jay, and in this ERRR episode you’ll hear me ask Jay the following:

  • What are essential questions and how do they help us teach for understanding?
  • What are the most common mistakes that teachers make in assessment?
  • Where is the Understanding by Design framework being used, and what have been some of its impacts?
  • What are some of the common misconceptions about understanding by design, and where should teachers start if they want to try it out?
  • And, perhaps the juiciest question of all: What is Understanding?. And I hope that you enjoy hearing me struggle to get my head around this concept during the interview!
