This episode we’re speaking with Paul Spenceley. Paul was a highschool head of science, head of biology, and science teacher for over three decades. He was heavily involved in Dylan Wiliam and Paul Black’s King’s College Formative Assessment Project, and has build on Wiliam and Black’s work over his career to refine and improve many of their Formative Assessment techniques and strategies in the classroom. Paul Spenceleys work on Formative Assessment has been so influential that in 2000 he was given an audience at Buckingham palace to acknowledge his significant contribution to education.
In today’s episode we discuss Paul’s book on Formative Assessment, Successful Science Teaching: Improving achievement and learning engagement by using classroom assessment. This book is an absolute gem. Written by a life long teacher, for teachers, it’s unapologetically practical, and that’s why I was so keen to have Paul on the podcast. The insights that Paul shares in this episode, on everything from improving learning intentions, to running quality classroom discussions, to helping students to improve their exam strategy technique, are not to be missed.
