This episode we’re speaking with Sammy Kempner. Sammy works as a Maths teacher at The Totteridge Academy – a mixed secondary school in north London. TTA has improved greatly in the last 5 years. The improvement in the Maths department has been particularly notable; 5 years ago the school’s Maths results ranked in the bottom third in the UK, but for the past two years (prior to exams being suspended due to covid) its results have been among the top ten performing schools nationally. This success was recognised when the Maths department won the TES Maths team of the year award in 2019. And in 2020, Sammy himself won the accolade of Inspirational Teacher of the Year at United Learning’s Best in Everyone Awards. This success was followed by his winning the Pearson Silver Award for Teacher of the year in a secondary school. This is a really fantastic episode of the ERRR podcast in which I speak to a fantastic maths teacher, from an award winning department, and really get into the details of how and why they teach maths the way that they do. Whether or not you’re a maths teacher, there are so many insights about teaching and learning within this episode for everybody.
