Tom Bennett is the founder of researchED, a fantastic organisation that provides an empowering platform for teachers to learn and connect around education and, in particular, research informed practice. Since 2013 researchED has visited three continents and six countries, attracting thousands of followers. Since 2015 Tom has been advising the UK government on school behaviour policy, a role for which he’s earned the title,’Behaviour Czar’. Tom has written Four books on education, one of which, we’re discussing today, and all-round he is a core figure within the UK, and global, education scene.
The book of Tom’s that we’re discussing today is Running the Room, a hugely popular book on behaviour management that is flying off the shelves at present. Within this interview we discuss habits, routines, norms, and go into specific detail about entry and exit procedures, approaches to running a first lesson with a new class, scripts to use when students make offensive remarks, and much much more.
I took a lot of key lessons away from this discussion and I now feel much better equipped to deal with, and crucially, to plan for, student behaviour in my classroom. I’m confident that by the end of this episode, you’ll feel the same way too!
